CGI Historical Environmental Information Reporting System

Fire Insurance Plans:

The Fire Insurance Plans mapped streets and buildings of urban Canada in great detail. The terms ‘maps’ and ‘plans’ can both be used to reference this product.  These plans illustrate building construction, occupancy and potential fire hazards. Fire Insurance Plans are an invaluable resource due to their ability to trace the historical development of many communities across Canada, as well as provide detailed information regarding storage tanks, transformers, boilers and electrical rooms. The original plans were produced between 1875 and 1923. They continued to be produced and updated until production ceased in 1974. There may be multiple plans available for the same location in some instances. For example, Port Colborne has plans dating from 1914 & 1953 . Copies provided in either 8½" x 11" or 11" x 17". Typically, the most recent, or last revised date, are in color.  The original fire insurance plans were produced by Chas. E. Goad Co. between 1875 and 1923.  The plans were produced and updated until production ceased in 1974.

The Fire Insurance Plan Indexes for Canada list available community coverage.
